Move a station? Sure. All it takes is a 250 ton crane, some spreader bars and a few dedicated volunteers. Opal Station has been moved about 50 feet east, nearer to Peavey Station and just south of the MOW display.
This frees up some walking space beside the track and opens up the walkway beside the MOW equipment. Brad operated the crane, Terry,
Jim, and Doug Hunt (a welcome former member and visitor) set the cables and guided the building onto its new foundation, which had been built by Hans, Barry and Phil.
At the board meeting last week it was decided to explore the possibilities of setting up a mini rail attraction. Irene and I visited George France's layout in Peace River on October 14.  He has 2 km of track which runs through trees, a tunnel, over a couple of trestles and through his "roundhouse".  He is a genuinely gracious host.
He let me run the train(!) and showed me how it was built and provided a wealth of information about the pitfalls and challenges that mini rail offers..... BUT the satisfaction of getting a running layout in operation makes the installation a delight. George has provided written how-to information about what we need to consider.  Ivan Hall has taken George's information, has scoped out our available space and  is our contact with mini rail enthusiasts.

On Saturday October 15 we had a full CSV crew out.  NAR flat car 15015 had the decking planks treated and about 2/3 of them installed - bolted to the frame of the car!  Barry had purchased bolts as well as more preservative and he was in charge of the project along with Rod, the guard. The crew ran out of time or the entire job would have been completed.

Planks were laid to repair the entrance to Dunvegan Shop through the doorway in front of 73. A site cleanup took place to stack and collect the extra planks and discarded materiel from the flat car.  Thanks Hans.

Some switching took place to provide more convenient access to various cars.  Previously Box Car CN 512719 was moved into Calder Shop for restoration.  It sits behind 9000, which is now first out on the north track facing west. Steel box car CN 477871 has been moved beside Calder for repair, painting and re-organisation of the items stored inside. It sits just west of  15015.

More crews are planned for October 21, 22, 25, 27 and 28.  We are getting superb cooperation from the CSVs and Alberta Justice. This makes it possible to take advantage of the weather and allows us to maximize our scarce resources. The CSV program is a major contribution to our repair, restoration and maintenance requirements.

And they like to be here!  Is it the hamburgers and hot dogs?

We were unable to salvage many of the planks from the platform for the
repair of the deck  on NAR 16511 so we will have to buy another load of new planks.
The planks for NAR 15015 have been delivered thanks to Don Weymouth. The load is parked beside the door on Calder shop, next to flat car NAR 15015.  The planks will be treated with preservative  and will be put on to the deck of the flat car later this month once the remaining bolts have been cut off.
Clearing off the items on NAR 16511 will also take place later this month.

Switching the yard has been done for winter. Thanks to Barry and Terry Wolfe, the final movements were done on October 1.

Due to illness the CSV crews have not been out this week,  but I have scheduled them for some days later in the month.
