The last board meeting had several items on the agenda that required approval for expenditures. They were: $250 for repair of the starter for the Trackmobile, $1, 750 for moving the LaFarge 50 ton locomotive by truck from LaFarge to the museum. A submission for a rolling ladder was missed so there will be an extraordinary meeting of the board to approve this purchase. We can purchase one for about $1,000. Funds are available for all the above.
A proposal is under consideration for upgrading Dunvegan Shop. Dunvegan has not had any significant work done on the building since it was built in 1970. The proposal includes upgrades for heat, lighting, insulation and roof repair. The heating system in Calder is very successful so we will install a similar one in the main shop in Dunvegan.The carpenter shop will have a different furnace that will not put the building at risk from igniting the sawdust that is generated in the Carpenter Shop.
The two south bays will be encapsulated, the existing foam insulation will be strapped up securely and about 10" of Zonolite will be blown in on top of the existing vapor barrier. This method capitalizes on the Government of Canada Winter Works Project that was done over 15 ears ago but never fully completed.
The north bay will be used for restoration projects such as roofing and siding that can be done in the summer. There is a lot of work required to insulate the bay and it would require separate heating so it will not be insulated at this time.
A quote has been received for the insulation and we are awaiting ones for the furnaces, the roof and the electricity. The quotes could come in at around $60,000.
We will apply for a major grant to upgrade Dunvegan Shop. The plan is to use money received from the casino in May for meeting the 50% grant requirement. So we put in $30,000 and get $60,000 in return. The deadline for applications is between June 16 and September 15 and the application will be reviewed between October 1 and December 31. This is a splendid opportunity to maximize the casino payout and give us the ability to turn Dunvegan into a year-round restoration shop.We have a donation of a smaller band saw in exchange for the huge band saw that went to the Edmonton Radial Railway Society in the summer. The smaller saw has been re-wired and is available for move. Thanks to the ERRS.Padre Brown from the Edmonton Garrison has arranged for a donation of a brass locomotive bell that was donated from a source that has yet to be confirmed. It has been sitting in storage for about 20 years, waiting to be put up on the chapel. I will arrange to pick it up in the new year.
