Spring has sprung at the Museum, the puddles are starting to dry up, the geese have returned, and opening day, May 18 is fast approaching.
Over the winter our steam engine, 1392, had its boiler certified by Alberta Boilers. The NAR flanger exterior rebuild and reroof was also completed. Some work remains to be done on the interior. Many thanks to all who lent a hand or two. Kudos to Jamie McQuarrie for building a caboose over the winter to bring up the tail end of our play train, #1968. Many other smaller projects were completed, they all add up as part of a very productive winter.
You may recall our fundraising campaign last year to replace the roof on the St. Albert station. We received a grant from Alberta Culture earlier this winter, and the campaign raised a good part of the matching funds. Work on the roof is starting this week.
Clean up days are scheduled for May 4 & 11, beginning at ~10:30 am. The spring clean up is to freshen up the site, the displays, the cars, to get everything ready for opening when we put our best face forward. All that is needed for participation is a willingness to help — no special requirements. No RSVP needed, come when you can.
Spring switching will also be taking place over the next few weeks, moving our rail cars around for better displays and for restorations.
Bookings for tours, weddings, birthdays and other activities are starting to roll in for the summer. We need to hire summer staff, and have planned for three staff this summer. If you know of a bright, capable and self motivated post secondary student, please have them contact me. Ideally the student would have a background in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math); education; or marketing.
